An Empty Nest

As parents, it's hard to watch our children grow up and start their own lives. On Monday 27/3/2023, my second daughter and son started their second Semester at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and as I watched them leave, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness. The house was quiet again, and I already missed their presence.

Even though I would pick them up every weekend to spend time with us, I knew it wouldn't be the same as having them around all the time. It's funny how, as parents, we spend so much time wishing for a little peace and quiet, only to realize how much we miss our children's energy and enthusiasm when they're gone.

As if the departure of two of my children wasn't enough, I also knew that my eldest daughter would soon be leaving too. She had recently graduated from UMS, and once she had gotten her job, she would be flying out to start her own life. While I was proud of her and excited for her future, I also knew that I would miss her terribly.

It's strange how life works sometimes. We spend so much of our time focused on the future, on our goals and ambitions, that we forget to appreciate the present moment. We forget to appreciate the people in our lives and the time we have with them.

As I looked around our now-quiet home, I realized just how much my children had brought into our lives. Their laughter, their jokes, their arguments - all of it made our home feel alive and full of energy. And now, without them here, the house felt empty and still.

But even as I mourned their absence, I knew that this was a natural part of life. Children grow up, leave the nest, and start their own lives. It's our job as parents to support them and encourage them, even if it means letting them go.

So, to my children, whether they are off at university or starting their own careers, know that I love you and am proud of you. I will always be here for you, no matter where life takes you. And to my fellow parents, I offer this advice: cherish the time you have with your children, for it is fleeting and precious.
